SYTYCD7: The Comeback Kids (Part I) – Alex Wong

Submitted by Trandrew on January 26, 2010 – 2:05 pmView Comments

So You Think You Can Dance still has any life left in it. Left in the dust without a dedicated tour from a debatably lackluster sixth season, one can only hope season seven revives what was once such a successful and great show.

Season seven can be argued to hold a crucial part in SYTYCD‘s future, taking place right after the lowest viewed season since the first; was it the sudden fall-shift of the schedule that led to the loss of viewers, or has America simply had enough of ‘dance’?

Three young male dancers may soon answer that question. Alex Wong. Billy Bell. Brandon Dumlao.

Alex Wong, 23, whose stint during season five’s Top 20 reveal stabbed hundreds of hearts across America, is back and ready to compete for another spot in the Top 20. Billy Bell, whose journey on season six was short-lived due to an illness, is healthy and ready to compete with Vegas’s Top 100 dancers. And there’s Brandon Dumlao, whose unexpected replacement for Billy gave him brief exposure last season but is now back and ready to secure his own spot in the Top 20.

“I have no idea what to do,” describes Wong freshly after his Top 20 rejection due to a contractual issue with Miami City Ballet. “After the first few weeks, I tried not to think about it, but it inevitably came back into my mind when I re-watched my elimination video. It made me cry every time.” Feeling let down with his dreams crushed, Wong sank into an angry midst but soon found inspiration through Debbie Allen.

“At first I felt like I wanted to quit, but I knew that everything happens for a reason. I remember Debbie Allen telling me to return with a good heart and a positive spirit, and that’s exactly what I decided to do.”

Wong, already an accomplished principal soloist with the Miami City Ballet, expressed during season five that although he was satisfied with ballet, the other styles featured on SYTYCD greatly intrigued him. MCB is primarily a repertoire company, meaning it revives past works that were created for others in its performances. “As much as I love doing repertoire, I also want to make my own mark in the dance world and have things created on me and be remembered.”

So You Think You Can Dance again.

Some may worry that Wong’s contract will once again keep him from competing if he makes the Top 20, but he assures skeptics that he has spoken with his director. They agreed Wong would not re-sign his contract for the next season so that he would be free to audition and in the end hopefully compete.

“Meaning I’m out of a job!” Wong jokingly, but worryingly, states. “When this season finishes at the Miami City Ballet, I will be hopefully continuing onto new challenges in my life with exciting changes and hurdles to overcome. I really hope to make it to season seven of SYTYCD as I’ve put everything I’ve worked for on hold to try and pursue my dreams. I want to explore my limits. I want to show the world what ballet dancers are capable of doing. I want to be a part of helping the new generation appreciate ballet, appreciate dance and appreciate the arts. This coming season means everything to me, and I can only hope I made the right decision.”

  • Jada
What a phenomenal dancer!! My eyez pop out everytime I watch him O_O He is AMAZZZZZING!! Go Alex!!!!!

Alex Wong embodies everything you could hope to see in a contemporary male dancer. He makes his power known while appearing effortless. His dancing is organic but still innovative and surprising. There is flawless technique but an animalistic quality. He uses ballet but doesn't shy from contortion. He even uses traditionally feminine moves without ever appearing effeminate.

Well I for one am really hoping Alex is one of the 5 boys chosen this season. I am hoping to see more of that DJ Juan young man as well (loved that clip you posted here)! Only a little while longer and I guess these things will be revealed! I hope great dancing continues to be important to the TPTB not just personality! I believe that they are hoping for both in the dancers they choose! I can't wait. Please let Alex be in the mix!

To be frank I have loved all the seasons of sytycd for different reasons. Yes Season 6 was poorly laid out (too much time spent on the auditions and not enough on the top dancers). It was rushed but we still saw some amazing pieces/dances/dancers! I am looking forward to seeing what the All Stars can bring to the mix. Bring it on!

The reason last season's ratings went down IMO is that the dancers were not as technically qualified. The show went for drama instead of dance. Fans--die-hard fans who've been watching for multiple seasons--were coming back again and again to see DANCING, not drama. If we wanted drama, we'd tune into TNT, eh?

The new format--with crap "stars" like Comfort, who's afraid of her OWN skin, let alone touching a partner--will actually do even more harm to the ratings. It's only dancers like Alex Wong and Billy Bell who'll have the strength to counteract the damage some of the rejects will do by returning. They were voted OFF for a reason, *duh*
  • -sry
Sorry, I wasn't clear, the rejects were voted off, not Billy or Alex :)
  • bandanajack
    wow.. just wow.
  • jcf
Judges, put Alex Wong straight through to Vegas. He should need to audition again.
  • -sry
jcf - Alex was already promised -- on record -- that if he returned, contract-free, he WOULD go straight through and not "need" to re-audition. But srsly, don't you WANT to see him dance again? OMG, don't cheat us out of a few more minutes of Alex Wong flying on that stage :)
  • jcf
correction: He should NOT need to audition again.
  • JareddMartin!:D
i remember being soooooo shocked when i found out he didn't make it to top 20. i'm glad he's going for it again though
  • marycos
    Yeahhhhh! I'm excited for S7!
I thought Alex Wong was divine during S6 auditions. Must surely be in S7 Top 20.
  • Jenny
He auditioned for season 5, he wasn't ever on 4 season 6.
  • marycos
Yes - remembered that after I hit submit. S5/S6 kind of get mixed up in my head. Wonder why that is...
  • Thanks so much for the story. I am absolutely interested in those promising dancers coming back. Alex is so talented it was really a shame that he couldn't get out of his contract. It's a bit short-sighted for the company, as in the end it's just a lot of promotion for the company if he's on SYTYCD. The other "comeback kid" I"m looking forward to is tapper Ryan, although with the overabundance of tappers last season, it doesn't look good for him.

I am SO sick of reading about "lackluster Season 6"...seriously? The dancers were amazing and the dances some of the toughest and best yet for me..."You Tore My Heart", "Fear" "Your Ex-Lover is Dead", "Ordinary Day" Molly and Nathan's Bollywood, the Mr and Mrs Smith table Dance, "Watcha Say" (appropriately danced just before Tiger Woods phone woes were discovered!), and ALL of Jakob's dances...they were so fun to watch, and denying them a tour after talking about it is really a dirty trick to the dancers and the fans.
Just because you really like one season doesn't mean you need to hate the rest of them...
Season 6 was less-watched because they jammed it into a non-time and it didn't fit there.
We watched it every week and still watch our dvr'd episodes most days!
  • and the article's main point is to catch up with alex wong so obviously you misunderstood most of the post. <3
  • if you read more carefully, you'd notice i never said the dancers were lackluster.

"Just because you really like one season doesn't mean you need to hate the rest of them..."

lol wow. never said i hated it?! just claimed it didn't rank in as much views as the other ones.

I am SO tired of reading Season 6 dancers were "lackluster" and choreography "sucked"...SERIOUSLY??? The Mr. and Mrs Smith dance? You Tore My HEart? Your Ex'Lover is Dead? Ordinary Day and Bollywood with Molly and Nathan? Fear? Everything, just about that Jakob did? I LOVED the dancers and the dances...jamming it into a non-schedule is why people didn't get into it, and denying them a tour is such a dirty trick to them AND the fans.
  • kiches
Awesome Alex update! I really hope he makes it season 7 because I'll be really disappointed if he doesn't. Season 6 dancers were great, season 6 producers and fox sucked.
  • MovieBuff
    Awesome write-up Trandrew! (so professional!)

    <3 Alex Wong

I am greatly looking forward to Season 7 (some seriously RIDICULOUS dancers are auditioning).....hopefully the production of Season 7 will live up to its dancers.
  • bryantphan
    I'm SUPER excited. :)

Alex Wong is gonna KILL it in Season 7. :)
Billy Bell and Brandon Dumlao are gonna be invincible too. I can't wait. UGH!

P.S. - Did you interview all 3 Andrew?
  • wendeelue
Season 6 - Lackluster!? If it got lower numbers, that is not the fault of those amazing dancers -
  • precisely!

never wrote that it was the dancers faults...
  • cdance
Oh, the dancers of 6 were amazing, for me it was the scheduling. I didn't have time between my dance classes and homework to watch "dance". Even though I caught up on weekends, i was dissappointed with the things like the new stage, no rotating judge, and a stupid 1 hour finale. I will DEFINATELY be watching season 7 though, I love this show.

Is it for certain going to be back in the summer, Trandrew?
  • gogogogogogogogogogogo Alex wong!!!!!!

    aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
